I have recently been experiencing some pain and numbness in my left arm. My doctor seems to think that it could be a pinched nerve. Being the type who wants to know everything possible about any diagnosis I started doing research. I found something called Cubital Tunnel Syndrome has the same symptoms. What really surprised me is that this Syndrome seems to be on the rise because of the increased use of mobile devices and computers. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is brought on by increased pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow. The nerve is right next to the bone and has very little padding over it so any pressure would put pressure on the nerve. Holding your elbow in a bent position for long periods of time or repetitive elbow bending and straightening can cause Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. Recently while traveling I noticed in the airport there were a large number of people using laptops and an even larger number using BlackBerrys or Smartphones. How many hours a day do you hold up a phone to your ear? How long do you have a BlackBerry in your hand each day sending text, emails or bbm? When I was younger I used to laugh at my Mother-In-Law’ who insisted I could not have a microwave because they could cause you to be sterile. So far I haven’t seen any evidence of this. So is this just another “blame it on modern convenience” or will this become the “BlackBerry Syndrome”? Will “Tennis Elbow be replaced by “BlackBerry Elbow”?
