With the release of the BlackBerry Tour, it looks like us CDMA users are finally getting some more attention, and I don’t know about you but I have been waiting for a CDMA Next-Gen BlackBerry with a full (physical) QWERTY keyboard for a while. Now what advantages does this new BlackBerry have over the existing ones? Sure it’s it looks nicer and performs quickly but what really is under the hood of this Tour 9630, let’s take a look.
I’ll start with device (application) memory, until recently the device has been confining us to perform constant battery pulls and kept us watching our File Free in fear of it dropping too low (and losing our emails/calendars), but now we are finally getting some room to breathe. The Tour holds the largest amount of device memory then any CDMA BlackBerry to date, that’s 4x’s as much as the 8830 and the 8130, 3x’s as much as the Curve 8330 and twice as much as the Storm 9530. So go ahead, start up the App World and download away.
This is also the first CDMA World Phone with a physical keyboard, so you non-touch screen people can finally upgrade your trusty 8830, and it is a worthy upgrade. The Tour will not be as bulky as the 8830 but it has a similar keyboard layout with the grooved keys. If you do travel the world you are most likely taking some long flights, and your Tour’s high resolution screen is perfect for watching the occasion movie, trust me it is a noticeable difference.
The Tour also runs off EVDO RevA network signals, which is typically 2-4 times faster than the normal EVDO Network, so streaming audio and surfing the web will be a nicer experience. The other major difference between this Tour and the older is the processor embedded in there, it houses the same processor as the BlackBerry Storm, so it run twice as fast and the older 8830/8330/8130 BlackBerries, not something that is advertised as much as the other details mentioned above but it definitely makes a difference.
So whether you’re looking for a new BlackBerry to travel the world with, watch movies, or just an upgrade with a physical keyboard I strongly believe you would be happy with the Tour.
Below is a technical comparison chart for the CDMA BlackBerries.
